Canterbury style 3 prong Hoe head.
Hoe or Howe in the middle ages from the French Houe and related to the Germanic Houwan – to Hew. 3000BC a Sumerian creation myth invoked a god with a hoe. Enil. Hoe was mentioned later in 7 and 8 centuries BC in the book of Isiah. In the 13 century, iron and steel so improved effectiveness that use of the Hoe spread worldwide.

English. 20C. By Holtzappfel. Steel with wooden grip. Named a ‘Harpoon’ Weed Extractor. Model No,2. Marketed as especially suitable for plantains, dandelions and other weeds found on the lawn. Ref 1931 Walker and Holtzappfel catalogue 1931. Number 1 was advertised in 1925 and showed a crook ash stick.

English Early to mid 20C. As new with black powder coat on brass with screw cap. Weed killer is poured in at top and weed injected with hollow spike. Also sold in bronzed steel Ref: Brown & Sons 1934 catalogue.31 inches (79cms).

English. 20C. Steel and ash with brass ferrule. 13 inches (32.8cms) x 5.5 inches (13.8cms).
English. C1880. Weeder with funnel and point for injection. This ingenious device is comprised of a slightly tapered ash shaft along which is a copper tube inset into a groove. The tube is held captive by some staples and at the pointed end a brass ferrulewhich also gives added strength. Halfway along the shaft is a protruding handle turned from beech and has a brass ferrule. This is fastened by a long steel pin which is riveted over through brass washers. At the supply end is a large tin funnel with a brass reinforcing lip. From the bottom of this is a brass tap. The funnel is carried by a bent wire bracket attached to shaft with staples. The tap is connected to the copper delivery tube by a length of replacement of rubber hose. The pointed end is steel and the weedkiller runs from the delivery tube and coats the point which injected into the weed. The brass makers label is incomplete and reads: ‘Mrs Graft– . Paten—. No.123–.’ The patent number indicated year 1883 to 1884. 51.5 inches (1310cms).

A stainless steel 2 prong weeder or cultivator from the 1950’s. Made by ‘Stainless Steel Developments Ltd London England’. The company made a small range of upmarket garden tools but went into liquidation. 8.5 inches (21.5cms) x 1 inch (2.6cms).
