English. C 1900. Beech wood. 32.5 inches (82.5cms) x 1.75 inches (4.2cms). Royles pattern. Stamped ‘Hodgkinson& Sons Makers Blackburn England’. Sold by George Harding in 1935 and by William Wood 1938. With ‘Cop’ of black cotton on paper mount. Normally sold with 2 Cops either black or white. Used to web around sticks to keep cats and birds off seed beds and in fruit trees. A near identical model by Royle was offered by Harrods catalogue in 1907.
J J Royle 14 Holborn Viaduct. Royle a prolific inventor is best known for a self-pouring teapot patented in 1886.
